WHAT IS REIKI?

I get it. Before embarking on my journey, I hadn’t even heard the word Reiki. Yet, Reiki found its way to me nonetheless. Over the past five years, I have dedicated myself to energy healing, working to heal myself through learning, training, and practicing. It has been an amazing journey thus far.

So, what is Reiki? To truly grasp that question, let’s start with a simple science lesson: everything is made of energy. The table you’re resting against, nature, and even you are composed of energy. Scientists have proven this and developed machines to verify it. How does Reiki fit in? Remember that you are made of energy. When your energy flows optimally through your body, you feel centered, relaxed, and at peace. Your physical health is thriving, and you aren’t battling any illnesses. Mentally, you are sharp and present. However, when life happens and your energy gets stuck, that’s when you may feel less happy, stressed, or fatigued and become more susceptible to infections.

This is where the incredible Reiki benefits come into play. Reiki is a Japanese energy healing technique designed to help keep your energy flowing smoothly throughout your body. It has been proven to assist in stress reduction, pain relief, injury recovery, and alleviating both symptoms and causes of illnesses. It effectively eases muscle pain, headaches, and promotes deep relaxation.

Reiki treats the whole person, addressing the FOUR intertwined parts of you: physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual.

As a complementary healing technique, Reiki works harmoniously alongside all other medical and therapeutic healing modalities.

WHAT TO EXPECT DURING A REIKI SESSION? 

While every person's experience with energy healing will be unique, there are several core elements of a Reiki session that stay consistent for all clients. The session will commence with some general questions about the client's physical, mental, and emotional health. Following this, the remainder of the session will take place in a calm, relaxed environment, where the client lies fully clothed on a massage bed. The practitioner will gently lay hands on the client or may hover their hands above the client's body. This gentle approach is one of the many reiki benefits, as it serves as a complementary healing modality.

WHO IS THE 'FOUR REIKI HEALING' PRACTITIONER?  

Hi, my name is Sarah Smith, and I am a certified Reiki Master.  

Reiki found me in a very unusual way; I wasn't consciously seeking energy healing, nor had I ever heard of it before. Yet, it found me nonetheless.  

My life hasn't been the same since discovering the wonderful Reiki benefits.  

I am passionate about sharing my knowledge and expertise in Reiki with both children and adults during our Reiki sessions.  

When I'm not working with clients and channeling Reiki energy, I'm a mom to 4 kids and two crazy dogs. This keeps me busy, brings me joy, and yes, lots of gray hairs.

WHERE ELSE IS REIKI BEING PRACTICED? 

Reiki, a form of energy healing, has begun to gain notability in the medical community outside of small private practices. 

Prominent hospitals, including Mayo Clinic, Massachusetts General Hospital, Johns Hopkins, St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Penn Medicine, Dana-Farber Cancer Institute, Yale Medicine, Cleveland Clinic, and Hartford Hospital, all offer Reiki programs for their patients. Many of these hospitals also provide Reiki sessions for the families of patients, allowing them to experience the reiki benefits as well. 

Additionally, Reiki is starting to gain traction in addiction rehabilitation facilities, further showcasing the versatility of this energy healing practice.

WHAT DOES SCIENCE SAY?

I get asked all the time, "What is Reiki anyways?" "Seems like something too good to be true; does it actually work?" I get it. That was my initial response too. Surprisingly, the saying, "it's not magic, it's science!" is rooted in just that—Science!

A recent breakthrough study on energy healing, conducted at the MD Anderson Cancer Center, focused on pancreatic cancer cells and demonstrated a significant reduction in cancer cell growth in both petri dishes and in mice. Why is this study different from many others? It's important to note that pancreatic cancer was chosen specifically for this research due to its reputation as one of the most challenging cancers to treat with conventional medicine. Another key distinction of this study is that the cells were placed in petri dishes, which eliminates the human placebo effect from the healing process. This means that the energy healing alone and not the human aspect of healing was responsible for the reduced cancer cells.

Another excellent resource is a book by Ann Baldwin, a PhD from The University of Arizona. In her book, she outlines various scientific studies on Reiki benefits and their findings regarding energy healing. The title of her book is *Reiki in Clinical Practice: A Science-Based Guide*.
